Dr. Tien graduated from Chung Shan Medical University and completed Orthopedic Surgery Residency in Taiwan. He then came to United States for a research fellowship followed by clinical fellowship, and lastly senior clinical fellowship at Kleinert Institute in Louisville, Kentucky. He subsequently completed a second residency at the University of Louisville, School of Medicine in General Surgery, serving his final year as Administrative Chief Resident. 

After completed his training, Dr. Tien joined Kleinert Kutz Hand Care Center, a world-renowned hand surgery group, and stayed almost 20 years in Louisville, Kentucky. 

Before moving to California, Dr. Tien was a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. He was also the Chief of Division of Hand Surgery at the University of Louisville. He is a former program director of Hand Surgery Fellowship at the Kleinert Institute, which is the largest Hand Surgery Fellowship program in United States. He was also a member of Composite Tissue Allotransplantation Team and participated in eight hand transplantations including the first hand transplantation performed in United States.

In addition to regular hand and upper extremities conditions, Dr. Tien also manages complex conditions including trauma, vascular surgery, microsurgery, and joints/soft tissue reconstruction. He specializes in arthritis, nerve issues, and trauma involving the upper extremities with particular focus in thumb osteoarthritis reconstruction, nerve entrapments, peripheral nerve reconstruction, treatment of painful neuromas, targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR), and Regenerative Peripheral Nerve Interface (RPNI). He is also very dedicated in scientific research and has published multiple articles in major medical journals.

Dr. Tien is board certified in the United States in General Surgery and Hand Surgery. He is a Fellow with the American College of Surgeons and a member of AO Musculoskeletal Trauma “Hand” Faculty. He is also board certified in Taiwan for both Orthopedic Surgery and Hand Surgery.

 

In his spare time, Dr. Tien enjoys gardening, beekeeping and traveling.
